Ma Wenguo

Ma Wenguo, Wushu PhD, Professor, from Qian County, Shaanxi Province, born in July 1970. Former Director of the Wushu Department at Xi’an Physical Education University, Director of the Wushu Research Institute of the International Han-Tang Academy, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Wushu Association, Member of the Youth Scholars Committee of the National Wushu Research Institute, and Vice Chairman of the Shaanxi Wushu Association.

He has practiced wushu since childhood, receiving professional training under Mr. Gao Xi’an, former head coach of the Shaanxi Provincial Wushu Team and a national senior coach. Later, he became a disciple of the renowned Tongbei master Zhang Kejian, studying Tongbei styles, including Fanquan, Pigua, Chuo Jiao, Bajiquan, Chan Hai Whip Staff, Pigua Broadsword, Tipao Sword, and Yingfeng Spear Techniques.

In 2004, introduced by Zhang Kejian, he began studying under Zhang Kejian’s teacher, Master Zhang Qunyan, whom he respectfully regarded as his grandmaster. Under his tutelage, he received instruction in Duliu Tongbi Boxing, Pigua, Liangyi Tongbi Boxing, Yiquan, Yuan Gong, Miaodao, Fengmo Staff, Ditang Sword, Qi Spear, Luhe Spear Methods, and Liu Sword. Beyond this direct teaching, he devoted himself to the study of classical wushu texts and practiced diligently, gaining considerable insight into classical wushu performance, combat applications, and swordsmanship, earning his grandmaster’s praise.

Since 2005, he has also studied western boxing, Muay Thai, kendo, western fencing, and Filipino stick fighting, conducting comparative research with Chinese martial arts, and has committed himself to the study and transmission of “classical martial arts.”

He has been invited many times to the United States, Turkey, Singapore, Belgium, Japan, and other countries to teach classical wushu such as Fanquan, Whip Staff, and Miaodao. In 2005, he coached the Shanghai Wushu Team, teaching top athletes Tipao Sword, Pigua Broadsword, and Pigua Boxing. In November 2017, he coached the Shanxi Wushu Team, teaching Pigua Boxing, Tipao Sword, Pigua Broadsword, and Qi Spear, guiding athletes in integrating “traditional wushu” with “competitive wushu,” achieving notable results and positive reviews.

From 2009 to 2011, he served as head coach of the Xi’an Physical Education University Muay Thai Team, leading teams to multiple National Muay Thai Championships with excellent results. He has been frequently invited to universities, companies, and communities to give lectures on martial arts culture, teaching qinna (joint-locking), swordsmanship, and combat skills. At national-level professional wushu training programs, he has lectured on classical martial arts, transmitting classical boxing methods and weapons training.

Since 2013, he has been invited multiple times to instruct the Special Police Unit of Xi’an and special forces in the Western and Central Theater Commands of the Chinese military in combat with bladed weapons, helping to improve combat effectiveness. In 2017, fighting monks from the Southern Shaolin Temple in Quanzhou, Fujian, came to Chang’an to study Fengmo Staff from him and also taught Shaolin staff techniques in return.

Since 2018, he has apprenticed under Mr. Lu Jianjun, a renowned master of the Tianqi Staff in Northwest China, systematically learning and inheriting the Tianqi Staff, formally beginning his study of Northwestern staff techniques.

He specializes in the practice and combat application of classical wushu, particularly Pigua, Fanquan, and Yuan Gong, and has conducted unique research on spear, broadsword, and blade combat.

He is also a prolific writer, producing more than a million words annually published online and in print, focusing on wushu essays, prose, and reflections, with a style that is plain, vivid, and deeply resonant.

In 2017, he founded the “Chang’an Tang Sword Society” in Xi’an, serving as chief instructor, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of classical single-handed and double-handed swordsmanship.

In 2014 he entered the film and television industry, participating in the filming of multiple movies and TV series, often in major roles.

In January 2020, he was featured on the cover of Kung Fu Magazine in the United States.

马文国,武学博士,教授,陕西乾县人,出生于1970年7月,原西安体育学院武术系主任,国际汉唐学院武艺研究所主任,中国武术协会常委,国家武术研究院青年学者委员会委员,陕西省武术协会副主席。自幼习武,曾在原陕西省武术队主教练、国家高级教练高西安先生指导下进行专业武术训练,后拜著名通备武学大师张克俭先生为师研习通备武学,学习翻拳、劈挂、戳脚、八极、缠海鞭杆、劈挂刀、绨袍剑、迎风条子等。2004年,在张克俭先生的引荐下,开始师从其授业恩师张群炎先生,以师爷尊之,得其独流通臂拳、劈挂、两翼通臂拳、意拳、猿功、苗刀、疯魔棍、地趟剑、奇枪、陆合枪法、六剑等传授,耳提面命之余又潜心于古典武艺之典籍,勤习不辍,对古典武艺之演练及实战格斗和劈刺颇有心得,受到师爷之嘉许。2005年开始兼习拳击、泰拳、剑道、击剑和菲律宾魔杖等武技,和中国武术进行比较研究,致力于“古典武艺”之研习和传承。

曾多次应邀赴美国、土耳其、新加坡、比利时和日本等国家传授翻拳、鞭杆和苗刀等古典武艺。2005年,执教上海市武术队,为优秀运动员传授绨袍剑及劈挂刀、劈挂拳等武艺。2017年11月,执教于山西省武术队,传授劈挂拳、绨袍剑和劈挂刀、奇枪等经典套路,指导运动员进行“传统武术”和“竞技武术”的“融会”,效果明显,受到好评。2009——2011年,担任西安体育学院泰拳队总教练,多次组队参加全国泰拳锦标赛,获得优异成绩。多次受邀赴大学、企业和社区主讲武术文化专题讲座,传授擒拿、劈刺及格斗术,在全国性的专业武术培训班上,讲授古典武艺,传授古典武艺之拳法及兵器训练。2013年起,多次受邀赴西安市特警支队和西部战区、中部战区某特种部队传授兵器之劈刺实战,提高部队战斗力。2017年,福建泉州南少林寺武僧北上长安,学习疯魔棍,传授武僧少林棍法。

2018年起,拜西北著名天启棍大家卢建军先生为师,系统学习和传承天启棍, 正式开始研习西北棍法。

擅长古典武艺之劈挂、翻拳及猿功的演练、格斗,对枪法和刀剑之劈刺亦有独到研究。
常年笔耕不辍,每年有百万文字见诸网络和报端,以武学文章、散文和随笔为主,文笔朴实生动,隽永醇厚。

2017年,在西安创立“长安唐刀会”,出任总教习,致力于古典武艺之单双手刀法传承与推广。

2014年年,进入影视圈,参与多部电影、电视剧的拍摄,饰演主要角色。

2020年1月,荣登美国《功夫》杂志封面人物。
